The Dramatic Evolution in Golf Clothes 1920-Now

A recent un-stylish golfer inspired me to post again. For decades golf has been considered to be a gentle man’s sport. Not much has changed on the game’s features, so is its attire. It’s unclear where golf originated, but the modern golf is credited to developing in the damp moors of Scotland during the early 1500s. During this particular time, Scotland had a cold climate, in particular, hence determining the kind of sportswear the participants played with. It meant that the chilling climate dictated the attire of the players hence forcing them to incorporate heavy clothing, mostly made of tweed. Most of the players during this time wore: Sturdy shoes, tweed caps, tweed jackets (they were thick and made of woolen fabric) with starched collars and knickerbockers (mostly made up of baggy knee trousers). Something your great grandma might sew.

At the beginning of the 1920s, golf gained popularity amidst the wealthy circles, especially in America, due to its booming economy. Hence, the golf participants (mostly the rich) was elevated into a more fashionable look, which included spectator shoes, long stockings, single-breasted jackets, neckties, baggier knickers, and flat caps. This style of clothing dominated for a little while as people in this particular era required this manner of dressing only for comfort until the late 1950s when a significant evolutionary change was seen when the sportsmen introduced colored fabrics. In this particular period, a knitted golf shirt was introduced with lightweight, colorful trousers, oxford shoes, and time.

The groovy style, accompanied by an increase in the television broadcast of professional golfers in the 1970s, brought a radical change in the participants’ golf attire. The American people began to influence or to be influenced by the attires of the golfers. They adopted a new style of attire which included: the weaving of houndstooth patterns with purple, Kelly green, magenta colors on shirts and pants of the golfer colors final look of the golfers’ attires in this era was golf shirts with mock turtle necks, brown polyester pants, and houndstooth trousers.

Fashion athlete sponsorship in the late 90s marked the beginning of modernized knickers. Designer companies like Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, and Levi’s incorporated their logos on their sponsored golfer wears. To further influence the fans of the golfers, the designer companies introduced the Scottish plaid patterns. The company’s wear to their golfers included long shorts, knickers, tartan sweaters, polo’s and visas with the sponsor’s logo. Since this time to the present day, the incorporation of technology into the golf fashion has influenced the manufacture of new clothes for golfers, which are meant to enable practicality, ventilation, and mobility to the golfers hence increasing their performance. The companies have incorporated the different styles and tactics of manufacturing the golfer’s clothes over the years to form perfect golf wear, including flexible shoes, ventilated pants, cotton-polyester caps, zippered pockets, and visors. As discussed above, it’s keynoting that golf has a rich fashion history with a beautiful tradition that has lasted over the years. There have been several extraordinary radical changes in the golfer’s wears, but there are still traces of old traditions of the founding forefathers.

Dress the Part

When you are a golf pro, you have to dress the part. The image you portray is part of the sport. When people think about golfers, they think snappy pants and sweaters in the colder weather and logo polo shirts in the summer. I have been known to spot crisp white pants on more than a few golfers. Other sports don’t seem to have this same cachet. You can wear virtually anything to bowl or play tennis. However, tennis used to be a stylish sport in the good old days. I wonder what happened. Now I will have to rely on golf for my good example.

There are certain must haves when playing golf. I mentioned the clothing, but there is also the requisite shoes, sunglasses optional, and caps. For me, I add a Shinola watch with a leather strap to finish the look. I like the design and comfortable feel when I am out on the course. There are other brand, and I have tried more than a few; but I settled on this one as my favorite. No giant ugly black sport watch for golfing. I like the classic elegance of the Shinola. I will never regret making the decision to opt for quality and style. As I mentioned, dressing for golf, which includes all the accessories, is all about appearance. I don’t like to see teenagers playing looking like bums in torn jeans and logo tees with nasty sayings. I have appealed to the board that manages the course to outlaw such attire. I expect positive results from the vote in a few weeks. Who wouldn’t want to rule against outlandish behavior? Golfing isn’t meant to be for slobs.

Some weeks later, the board did in fact vote to have a dress code. The young players who were used to wearing unsightly clothing rebelled. They mounted a protest in front of the club room, complete with giant signs that said “unfair rules.” It was embarrassing for the club staff and members and they almost acquiesced and repealed the clothing standard. With support from members like me, they stuck their ground. I was so thankful that I addressed the next protest wearing my best golf outfit and Shinola watch. “Here’s what golf attire looks like,” I shouted. I got back a lot of boos. So here is what I did. I convinced the golf shop to offer free clothing, one to a customer. Oddly enough, this action got a favorable response from the crowd. One by one, the teens entered the shot and were outfitted in new clothing. After about an hour, the last one was done. I asked to take a photo of them for the Golf Club newsletter and they agreed. I had pulled off a major coup. It was genius public relations. You have to understand teen psychology to get why it worked.

Since that day, the golfers of all ages have never looked better. The board silently thanked me for my help and granted me an extended membership to include family and friends.

My Favorite Time of Day

I think I am pretty clever to use the driving range at night when it is less crowded. Unfortunately, there are a few folks who feel the same way. I have to put up with the same throng of people as I do during the day. Lately I have been feeling a little overburdened with some personal and work issues, and I need to unwind at night to stave off burnout. We all go through these phases. My friends and I often talk about what makes us feel this way and it takes the weight of worry off our shoulders. When you share experiences, you get suggestions for solutions or just suddenly come up with your own.

The range is beautiful at night in any case, whatever reason you choose this time to day for your round of golf. People who experience it for the first time get hooked. Sometimes I get home late and miss dinner if it had been planned for an early hour. Okay, I’m fine with reheated leftovers. I don’t play golf at night every night. It would be a discourtesy to my family. But as I mentioned, when I need a personal release, it becomes the perfect panacea. I sometimes ask friends or co-workers to join me, but in some cases I just like to be alone with my thoughts to unwind. It pays to have someone along to help you find your way back to your car if it is a dark light with not a trace of the moon. Usually the other person remembers better than I do where we left the car in the huge parking lot. I don’t relish the idea of walking around and around it before stumbling on my vehicle.

If I am alone, the best plan I have devised is to take a medical penlight with me to help me look at license plates so I can identify mine. It also helps illuminate the door lock so I can see better when I slip in the key. I was given this great penlight as a gift and love it because it is not big like a huge flashlight. Who would want to drag that around the driving range? A pen light has a lot of light if you get a good one. I love that it fits nicely in my shirt or pants pocket. Maybe someday the course will put in bright light bulbs in the parking lot, but so far it hasn’t happened. Then I can dispense with the pen light, but frankly I just like having it. It could get you out of some fixes. You never know. I like it so much that I don’t even mind putting it in my golf bag. It isn’t as easy to retrieve as from my pocket, but at least I know where it is and that it won’t fall out. So treat yourself to a medical (high-powered) pen light. I know of what I speak.

Saves me a Visit to the Pro Shop

I am a busy man. I have my all day job at the golf course and then my responsibilities at home. I am a do it yourself kind of person so I enjoy spending weekends around the house and yard sprucing things up. There is always some landscaping task the lawn to mow. I like to plant seasonal flowers whenever I can. As a result of all my time-consuming efforts, the house looks great, in tip top condition. Where I draw the line is the car. I do not work on engines. The best I can offer is a good washing and chrome polishing now and then. My preferences clearly lie with the house. My wife makes a list of things to do in order of priority and I try to get them all done within a month’s time. Don’t feel sorry for me that I have all these tasks. I still have time for friends and family on weekends, especially at night. I take advantage of any free moments to entertain in my basement rec room. I have a giant plasma TV ideal for watching any ball games or golf tournaments. Those occur mostly in the day time so on those occasions, I take a breather from household chores. I like to do the shopping and run errands rather than sitting around the house. My home is indeed my castle. Installing a home theater makes it even more so. I more than enjoy a busy life. Work and play: that is the balance we all seek.

Having accomplished all of the items on my to do list, I then proceeded to work on removing the old and worn grips from my golf clubs. I have a home air compressor perfect to help me execute this job. Being able to do it myself saves me a trip to the pro shop. I don’t mind errands, but this is one I don’t need to do. I was able, with the help of the compressor, to do a pretty good job. The appearance of the clubs was certainly improved. I use the compressor for other tasks, and this was an odd one to be sure. These tools are a must for anyone with a workshop in the garage. You don’t have to have old golf clubs to require buying one. Remember they inflate tires.

There finally came a time when I had gotten so much done that I was practically idle. I must have been working at an accelerated pace for months. I was an eager beaver to prove I could handle any task, but it now leaves me with too much free time. I may have to build something like an outdoor pergola or kitchen on the terrace in the back yard. This will take at least a few months and will certainly occupy my mind and body. I might even pop over to the pro shop to see what is new.

Just Doing my Duty

Any Wildfire pro-am golf event is a major crowd pleaser and a local attraction of renown. It takes a committee of people dedicated to making sure that everything proceeds properly and there are no glitches. We have had people who failed to perform their duties in the past with disastrous results. So when a committee is formed, it better consist of reliable people. The event has to have publicity and press coverage. It has to start on time and all bases covered from start to finish. We also celebrate the top golfer of the day with a reception. Catering has to be organized and a location scouted out so that it is a pleasant experience. We do many events per year so we practically have a ready-made agenda. As long as experienced people are always included in the planning, nothing can go wrong. At least not anymore. There were times when things went haywire. I remember when we started doing brochures to promote the Wildfire pro-am and they fell apart. These were important elements in the publicity category and the consequences were felt far and wide. We had to scramble at the last minute to find other solutions. We ended up with one-page color flyers, which wasn’t a bad idea, but certainly not as nice as a brochure. Flyers can be a little cheesy and easily become overlooked.

So I was asked to be responsible for the brochures for our last pro-am and it was a job I would take seriously. To run a smoothly-operating organization, you give yourself a schedule to follow. I was anxious to order my paper, write the copy, and get ready for the printing, all far in advance. We had several great photos to include and they had to be placed appropriately. Over all, I think it was an attractive brochure sure to get us the promotion we needed. But remember, in the past, the brochures had fallen apart. Frankly, I am not sure exactly why. I think it was the cheap elementary school style stapler used for the job. The staples were always jamming and sometimes came out two at a time. I was not about to let this happen again. I borrowed an electric heavy-duty stapler and tested it many times. I had to wait for the proof copy to arrive from the printer. Once I accepted the color quality and the paper, I ordered the first batch. I was waiting in the wings with my stapler to get buy assembling the brochure. It worked well and I waited for the next batch. It was a nice little booklet and it looked like the staples were going to be permanent. I didn’t need to panic. But another sloppy job wouldn’t be tolerated. I was looking for perfection. It’s all in the tools you use. I got a really good one I could rely on. Everyone was pleased with the quality of the work and we proceeded to get the brochures in circulation to promote our event.

Marketing and Branding

I wanted to promote my golf instruction business and figure out a way to get the word out. My students of course were a big help in getting my referrals but I needed more than that. Any business, even if it is one person at a golf course, needs to grow. Of course you need a business plan that dictates your hours, locations, and how many people you can accommodate. The plan should also deal with publicity and promotion. One idea I had was to get a local newspaper to do a story on me and the interesting celebrities I have coached. Another was to include testimonials on my website of happy clients. People do look on your website these days to gather information and find out a little bit about who you are. The site should have photos and embedded videos of some instruction techniques. The contact information should be easy to find and you must include a way for visitors to the site to sign up for your emails and/or newsletter.

So it is all about marketing and branding when you have a business. It doesn’t just happen on its own. It must be built and nurtured over time. The idea is to get attention from prospective students and to become known as the best local pro. You can make flyers for a little added exposure especially if you have a special offer: let’s say a day of golf lessons for a discounted price or a group lesson for half the usual fee. All of these things: the newspaper article, the flyer, the website work, but there was one more idea I had to try. I wanted to paint a stencil of my company logo and phone number on my golf cart. I had an airless paint sprayer in the garage and realized that it hadn’t been used in ages. I got it out, cleaned it, and drove the cart home. I decided on the size and placement of the logo and if I wanted to add any more information. I preferred to keep it simple. I think people at the course will get the idea. Most know who I am. I wanted a reminder that was highly visible and colorful. It had to catch the wandering eye. The paint sprayer made the job easy and it looked very professional if I have to say so myself. I won’t be embarrassed by the quality. It won’t look like a do it yourself job.

It worked very well. I know because people commented on what a good idea it was. These were people who know me, but strangers also asked about my lessons. There is always a need for coaching when it comes to golf. New people start the sport all the time and don’t have a clue how to begin. It makes my business one that is in demand. I have an excellent program and a good reputation. Now all I needed was promotion.

Classin’ up the Place

The lounge at the golf course form premier members has a large wine refrigerator full of the best domestic and imported brands. They also have a full bar for those who want beer or mixed drinks. It is a comfortable and casual place where people can relax and enjoy some golf conversation. I have always liked the lounge and often take my students there after a lesson. It is a popular spot for people before and after a round of golf. The course is very social in orientation and also has a dining room for all meals.

I took notice of the large wine refrigerator because I have a rec room in my basement at home that I want to turn into a kind of mock lounge. There is plenty of room to put in a wet bar, some bar stools, and a home entertainment center. I will include a small version of the wine fridge at the course to class up the place. I will start making an effort to buy some cases of good wine. I can store at least one so each bottle will be properly chilled if it is white. There is a special section for reds that has a different temperature control. It will be a modest version of the fabulous wine cooler in the public lounge.

I hired a contractor to draw up some plans and he made suggestions where to install the bar and gave me some wine refrigerator reviews to look over, so I could choose which one would suit us best. We wanted it under counter to save space along the walls. The entertainment center was going to take up a lot of room. I needed to order a half dozen upholstered chairs for TV viewing and a card table and small chairs for when we wanted to indulge in a round of poker. I had some great professional golf photos enlarged and framed to decorate the many empty walls. It was going to be efficient, comfortable, and fun.

The first party I had in the rec room was a big success. I stressed a wine and cheese concept so I could focus on the contents of the wine fridge. People noticed and many commented that all they could do at home was use a conventional refrigerator that had no separate temperature controls for whites or reds. A wine fridge is indeed a touch of luxury. If class was what we wanted, we got it. People enjoyed looking through our wine collection to see if it merited such special attention. Maybe I should I have bought a larger size, but I was a bit intimidated by looking too ostentatious. After all, if you can cool a case of wine, that ought to be enough for one party. I had a few more cases of both whites and reds in a cabinet next to the wet bar’s sink. My parties are on the small size, so I could accommodate everyone. I love having my own version of the gold course’s lounge.

How to Hire a Golf Instructor

How to Hire a Golf Instructor

For most of its history, golf was a game for wealthy gentlemen. It was played on exclusive courses and cost an arm and a leg (for most people) to play the game on a regular basis. Today, golf lessons are more affordable even with a private instructor, they are accessible and offer many of the same benefits of other sports. In addition, the game is enjoyed by a wide variety of people from different social and economic backgrounds. It is now a game for the common man. Retirees love golf for its social opportunities especially if they can live near a good facility.
To find a good golf instructor, you don’t need to join a country club or pay greens fees in the hundreds of dollars to play great golf courses on a regular basis. Many municipal facilities are surprisingly affordable and offer high-quality, challenging courses. Look for executive courses, which feature shorter holes, and often only one, nine-hole golf course. The fees at many executive courses are less than $20.

Furthermore, you don’t need to commit to several hours to play golf. You can have lots of fun each week taking driving range lessons or just working on your putting or pitching. You can work on several aspects of your game while simulating on the teaching course.

You can hire the top pros as your instructor as you advance in your game and find you require more specific expertise. Most courses and country clubs will indulge you and find a good match if you describe your game and current goals. Ask your friends whom they recommend at the start. You will pay according to the level of the pro you hire, so consider what you need at this point in your game and be realistic. You can change up if you don’t find the pro is a good match for your skills or you don’t share compatible personalities. You want someone who is tolerant with beginnings, pushes you to get ahead, and is sympathetic and encouraging. You want someone to help you select the right clubs and know the dynamics of each type. If you want classic instruction or more of an individualized approach, be clear on your specifications. No two golf instructors are exactly alike. Whoever you hire, you are likely to enjoy the experience. After all, you are in the great outdoors with plenty of fresh air, you are making friends, getting exercise, and keeping fit. What more could you want from your golf practice?

Benefits of a Good Golf Clinic

August 19, 2016

Any serious golfer worthy of the name will take a golf clinic now and then to improve aim and stroke. You might find you learn a few surprising tricks. Don’t assume you don’t need one unless you want to stagnate in your game. Sure you can look at videos on line: 28 seconds to learn good golf swing tips just like the master’s. Or ten lessons from Hank Haney so you can play better golf in the very next round. It isn’t that simple. I wish we could believe it. Why not go to a country club in person, hire a pro, and get some real sound advise you can implement for life without kidding yourself that a few seconds instruction is all you need to be sublime at the game.  There is nothing like having the individual right there at your side. You will have more concrete interaction and a real life exchange.

Most courses have golf clinics that encourage all of its students to make their golf game a priority, which is why lessons are included in the school tuition as a result. Lessons, taught by seasoned PGA professionals, are available five days a week ideally so you can pick and choose your time. Instructors offer training in state-of-the-art swing lab, or on the range if you prefer, so rain or shine your game will only improve.

If working on your game is a top priority in your life, consider taking a clinic. Check out the facilities where lessons are given and see what there is to offer. Getting a glimpse of what life could be like if you were a clinic student, playing golf every single day, can be eye-opening.

When choosing a good golf camp, you want a convenient location so you will go often. You also want tailored instruction with hand-picked instructors based on your specific golf goals. You will want some flexibility in your scheduling to accommodate the needs of your busy life. It is all about getting your compliance so you don’t have any excuses not to attend. You want to make golf a real part of your athletic life so choose a clinic or series of classes that work accordingly.

Fitness is an extremely important component to any golfer’s game. Many Golf Academies and clinics now offers private TPI Fitness Screening sessions, giving golfers the opportunity to experience the same physical assessment and fitness training as the pros, regardless of age, current fitness level or handicap.

The assessment identifies physical imbalances, and a Golf Fitness Handicap (GFH) is established. The GFH is equivalent to a golf handicap in terms of physical capabilities. A fitness program is then designed to correct those imbalances and improve stability, mobility, flexibility, balance, posture, strength and power. Improved physical fitness levels increase endurance and injury prevention, improving performance.

TPI Fitness Screening Includes: Physical assessment, video analysis, TPI-generated workout program, and access to TPI literature and video exercises (viewable from iPhone or other compatible mobile device).

Choosing the Right Clubs

Choosing the Right Clubs

Golf is a game of hand eye coordination and consummate skill. That’s why people love it so. It is rising in popularity and not just because of the aging population. It is because no two games are alike. Choosing the right clubs give you the edge you need to beat the competition and come out on top. It is important to have your own set of clubs and to be custom fitted. A glance at a few YouTube videos will teach you everything you need to know if you don’t have a pro golfer on hand to do the job for you. First you will consider the drivers, performance on every swing. The TaylorMade M1 boasts a multi-material construction – It’s the key that unlocks performance.  This construction is highlighted by our proprietary 7-layer Carbon Composite Crown that is precision-formed and built ultra-thin, ultra-lite and high strength to maximize weight savings.  This addition has allowed us to build a weight-loaded sole and move overall clubhead weight (and, thus, the center-of-gravity) lower for a more efficient power transfer; giving golfers more ball speed.

Here are some of my favorite clubs.

The Carbon Composite Crown has also allowed us to give golfers 25 grams of multi-directional adjustability, allowing them to personalize launch conditions – fit to their swing – and optimize ball-flight, trajectory and, ultimately, distance.

Next on the list is the TaylorMade M1first Carbon Crown Fairway that lowers CG for optimal launch conditions. 30g (two at 15g) of sliding weight allows golfers to personalize trajectory to maximize performance and. The first carbon crown fairway lowers CG for optimal launch conditions and speed with every shot.  The trajectory personalization thanks to the split 30g (2-15g) Sliding Weights allows golfers to personalize their shot shape to maximize performance and consistency.

Players seeking distance and playability and shot shape personalization to dial in launch conditions with their fairway wood. The carbon Composite Crown shifts weight low for optimal launch and spin conditions

TaylorMade’s M2 irons are distance machines – engineered to fly farther AND higher.  When we set out to design M2 irons, our focus was to achieve maximum. When we set out to design M2 irons, our focus was to achieve maximum distance without sacrificing the peak trajectory. The advanced materials and technologies that went into M2 irons enable the ball to not only go far, but high as well.

Because we were able to engineer irons that fly far AND high, M2 irons can deliver dramatic distance from every iron, for all golfers. This synergy of distance and height was accomplished through a unique combination of features and technologies. Distance will get you to the green – but distance and height – will help you stay there. This is the key concept behind M2 Irons.

You can’t play without a wedge. The TaylorMade electroformed Nickel Cobalt grooves provide long lasting spin. The Tour Preferred EF Wedge now comes in a soft 1025 carbon steel body with a SatinChrome finish. the electroformed Nickel Cobalt grooves provide long lasting spin plus has

  • Soft 1025 carbon steel body
  • Glare reducing dark smoke PVD finish
  • KBS Tour wedge shaft
  • Golf Pride Tour Velvet Red Cap Grip

Want to know about putters? Go Bigger; Get Better… Make More Putts.Oversized heads increase stability at impact, keeping you more on line and into the hole more often. Vertical, Deep-milled insert allows for better ball gripping for improved roll, sound, and feel. Raised high contrast sight line makes it easier to aim. Skin-milled surfaces offer the ultimate in high-quality finishing.

The new OS & OS CB putters, provide a larger, high moment of inertial (MOI) design exhibiting an expanded sweet spot and improved alignment system. The latest in putter stability innovation from TaylorMade Golf comes in both OS (Over Size) and CB (Counter Balance) designations. The OS models feature slightly larger head sizes than traditional putters while also delivering higher moment of inertia. For players seeking even more stability, the OS CB models are even larger in size, deliver higher moment of inertia and feature counterbalance technology to stabilize and smooth the putting stroke.

This is the tip of the iceberg and there is a lot more to learn about clubs and strokes before you reach golf perfection. We are just suggesting some basic introductory material so you have a focus. Get a pro to demonstrate each club for you.

My Favorite Golf Courses

July 26, 2016

I wouldn’t want to make an exhaustive list of my favorite golf courses lest I offend someone whose course I frequent often. It would be most prudent to say that I love them all! There are many such in my area of Ontario, Canada. You would have to list courses outside of Canada which would include the incomparable St. Andrews Scotland, one of the rarest gems on earth. Of course it stands out. Now there are courses I like simply because of the people I played with there. In Beverly Hills, California, there is a mundane public course on which I played with Matt Damon one day, a course regular. I never forgot the experience hence it is has special place in my heart. Then Central Oregon has a nice course like Brasada Canyons, and Black Butte Ranch. No list would be complete without the incomparable one-of-a-kind award-winning Pebble Beach, on the spectacular location of the 17-mile coast line, like none other on earth, near the picturesque vistas of Spanish Bay. Just being near the crashing waves against the jagged rocks makes you play golf better they say. There is no place like Pebble Beach in north America and a golfer must visit it at least once..  If you find yourself on the east coast, by contrast, you can go to Tranquilo Golf Club at the Four Seasons Resort in Orlando, Florida. It is often a matter where you choose to go on vacation or if you want a change of scene such as Hawaii, North Carolina, or Arizona. Good golf is not hard to find in almost every state of the union even Alaska. Do yourself a favor and try a few new ones once in a while before you wander off internationally in exploration of new-found courses.

Tips on Playing Against Pros

July 19, 2016
| Games

To learn to play against the pros, you become a student all over again starting from scratch. You find out fast that one swing does not fit all students and won’t guarantee you will prevail against the pros. It is not easy to beat the pros. There are no hard and fast rules in spite of what some say. What works for one player can hinder another.  To get ahead with your game you must use your natural ability as a baseline for your swing. It takes years of honing your skills. Don’t think there are easy short cuts unless you are a born natural.  It is all about feel. Technology and experience not only help to discover the most efficient route to improvement, but it also creates repeatability. There is something to be said for consistency. When students can consistently repeat the correct fundamentals, with positive, real-time feedback rapid improvement is obtainable.

Feel is real as a precept in learning golf.  Implementing a strong foundation and repeatable swing techniques created from by mentors and pros for students creates greater consistency and more control over the golf shot. Using TrackMan as a guide, for example, you can have reliable swing and ball flight data essential to improving your game.  Instructors can compare swing data from lesson to lesson, ingraining the correct swing, to ball flight and impact, adding confidence to your golf game.

Above all it one who takes it seriously is going to prevail. You can’t make wild assumptions about beating the pros without putting it your dues and having some basic skills. On the other hand, don’t assume you won’t improve enough to get into a good game. It is the challenge of golf to get a good, fair competitor. You want someone who will give you a run for your money. It is important to be matched well if you can. Even novices have their counterparts.
